Great BBC Drama Shows Online
There’s been some great news dramas on the BBC over the last few weeks. Much of the hype was directed towards ‘The Bodyguard’ which was good but arguably not quite as good as some of the others shows recently aired.
I’m currently watching Killing Eve which is a great show that tells the story of a sexy, psychopathic assassin brilliantly played by Jodie Comer. Who one minute is a cold blooded, evil killer and in the next scene will be funny, charming and engaging. She does something utterly evil and you’re ready to hate her then her character flips on its head. She’s known within most of the show by the name Villanelle and the character is chased by the British security services primarily by a desk jockey called Eve Polastri.
Sandra Oh plays the role of the security operative Even Polastri, who is both talented, intelligent and perhaps a little clumsy in her pursuit of the ruthless Villanelle. All the main characters in this show are female and throughout the pursuit both women become slowly obsessed with each other. It’s a testament to the screenplay that you care about all the characters fairly early on the show, even the cold unfeeling assassin. Indeed, the show starts with a classic scene in an ice cream shop where we first see the real side of Villanelle as she casually destroys a little girl’s ice cream.
Killing Eve is based on Luke Jenning’s novel – Villanelle although the two lead roles are the main reason for watching, they really are both terrific. The plot is not overly complicated, and the story never drags, perhaps it could be argued that it moves a little too quickly. The body count certainly mounts up pretty quickly, it seems that our assassin gets little time between assignments. Although partly this is explained as to Villanelle killing is more of a hobby than a vocation.
It was aired originally on BBC America in April 2018 but has only just aired on the domestic BBC. However of course’ it’s now on the wonderful BBC iPlayer and thanks to the new updates I think that should be for about 5 months. If you get the chance, try and watch this show it’s great fun and the two lead performances are wonderful. There are also some other great female characters, in fact the whole show is a testament about how this sort of drama can be produced without the usual macho male spy characters.
If you’re an Expat wondering how to get your TV fix, there’s plenty on the UK TV stations. To be honest both the BBC and ITV have some great shows and broadcast virtually all of it online too. So don’t bother with expensive satellite or cable subscriptions just use a simple Smart DNS or VPN and you’ll get all the TV you need from anywhere in the world.
If you want to watch it from the USA or indeed anywhere outside the UK, then all you need to do is sign up for a VPN or this Smart DNS solution. In fact, the two weeks trial will be easily enough to binge watch the entire show, it really is that good.
The second series of Killing Eve is not online and what’s more it’s available for a year on BBC iPlayer.
